Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 right for you?
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is the lower-priced of Samsung's two 2026 book-style foldables, and it has a different shape from the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Folded, it is short and wide at 81.9 x 123.9 mm, with a 5.5-inch cover screen in a 10:16 ratio. Open, it becomes a 7.6-inch 4:3 display in landscape, closer to a small tablet for video, reading, and two apps side by side.
Against the Fold8 Ultra it costs $200 less at US launch ($1,899.99 against $2,099.99) and weighs 14 g less (201 g against 215 g), while keeping the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same RAM and storage options, 45W wired charging, and Wi-Fi 7. What you give up is screen size (7.6 against 8.0 inches open, 5.5 against 6.5 inches closed), the camera system (two 50 MP cameras against a 200 MP main camera with a 3x telephoto), and 200 mAh of battery (4,800 against 5,000 mAh).
Both Fold8 models are rated IP48, and Samsung advises against beach or pool use. For updates, Samsung's US product page advertises "up to 7x OS upgrades and security updates" without giving a period, and the launch release states no commitment. If you mostly want a phone that folds small, the Galaxy Z Flip8 weighs 180 g and launched at $1,199.99.
A good fit if
- You want a foldable that opens to a wide 4:3 screen for video, reading, and side-by-side apps.
- You want the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's processor and charging for $200 less at US launch.
- You prefer a shorter, wider phone when folded.
Look elsewhere if
- You want the strongest foldable camera: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra adds a 200 MP main camera and a 3x telephoto.
- You want a larger cover screen: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's is 6.5 inches.
- You work around dust or sand: the Fold8 is IP48, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Pixel 11 Pro are IP68.
Which configuration to choose
The 256 GB and 512 GB models have 12 GB of RAM; only the 1 TB model moves to 16 GB. The US launch price was $1,899.99 for 256 GB. The 1 TB model is widely sold but not in Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, or Taiwan; in Japan only the SIM-free and au models offer it, and US carriers sell it in Graphite only. Buy the model made for your region: SM-F971B internationally, SM-F971U1 unlocked or SM-F971U from carriers in the United States, SM-F971W in Canada, SM-F9710 in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and the SIM-free or carrier models in Japan. Pistachio is a Samsung.com exclusive and is not sold by US or Japanese carriers.
