Galaxy Z Fold8 vs Z Fold8 Ultra: Differences

Galaxy Z Fold8 vs Z Fold8 Ultra: screen shapes, size, cameras, battery, charging, price, update wording, and which configuration to buy.

The short answer

Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a foldable that opens to a wide 4:3 screen, weighs 14 g less, and cost $200 less at US launch. Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if you want a full-size 6.5-inch cover screen, the larger 8.0-inch main display, and the stronger camera system with a 200 MP main camera and a 3x telephoto.

They are not a basic and a better version of the same phone. The processor, memory options, charging speed, and water resistance are the same; the real difference is shape and cameras (Samsung specifications).

Two different shapes

Measurement Galaxy Z Fold8 Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
Folded 81.9 x 123.9 x 9.7 mm 72.8 x 158.4 x 8.9 mm
Unfolded 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.5 mm 143.2 x 158.4 x 4.1 mm
Weight 201 g 215 g
Cover screen 5.5 in, 1,248 x 1,972 6.5 in, 1,080 x 2,520
Main screen 7.6 in, 1,848 x 2,448 8.0 in, 2,504 x 2,256

The Fold8 is short and wide. Folded, it is 34.5 mm shorter and 9.1 mm wider than the Ultra, with a 10:16 cover screen; open, its 4:3 main display sits in landscape, which suits video and two apps side by side. The Ultra is tall and narrow like a regular phone when closed, and opens to a nearly square 8.0-inch screen. Unfolded thickness excludes the main-screen frame on both, per Samsung.

If most of your use happens on the cover screen, the Ultra’s 6.5-inch outer display is the one that works like a normal phone. If you mostly open the device, the Fold8’s wider canvas and lower weight are the draw.

Cameras

The Ultra has three rear cameras: a 200 MP wide with optical image stabilization, a 50 MP ultra-wide, and a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The Fold8 has two: a 50 MP wide with optical image stabilization and a 50 MP ultra-wide, with no telephoto. Both have a 10 MP cover-screen selfie camera and a 10 MP camera in the main screen (Samsung).

The practical gap is zoom. For portraits and subjects at a distance, the Ultra’s 3x lens avoids cropping from the main sensor. Numeric specifications alone do not establish photo quality.

Battery and charging

Samsung lists a typical 4,800 mAh battery for the Fold8 and 5,000 mAh for the Ultra. Both support 45W wired charging with an adapter sold separately: Samsung quotes up to 63% in about 30 minutes for the Fold8 and up to 67% for the Ultra. Both have 20W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare. Battery capacity is not a measured runtime.

What is the same

  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.
  • 12 GB of RAM with 256 GB or 512 GB, and 16 GB of RAM with 1 TB.
  • IP48, which Samsung bases on submersion in fresh water and does not advise for the beach or pool. Neither is dust-tight like an IP68 phone.
  • Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, 5G, Android 17 with One UI 9, and US availability from August 7, 2026.

For updates, the launch release gives no commitment for either phone. Both US product pages advertise “up to 7x OS upgrades and security updates” without stating a period (Fold8; Fold8 Ultra). That is less specific than the seven OS generations and seven years Samsung states for the Galaxy S26 series.

Price and configurations

At US launch the Fold8 started at $1,899.99 and the Fold8 Ultra at $2,099.99, both with 256 GB (Samsung US). Because the RAM only changes at 1 TB, pay for 512 GB only if you need the storage, not for speed.

The two phones use different model numbers (SM-F971 for the Fold8, SM-F976 for the Ultra) with the same regional suffixes: B internationally, U1 unlocked and U from US carriers, W in Canada, 0 in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and carrier-specific models in Japan. The 1 TB model is not sold everywhere; each device page lists the markets and colors for every configuration. The Samsung.com exclusive colors differ: Pistachio for the Fold8 and Green Shadow for the Ultra.

Who each suits

The Fold8 suits people who open their foldable for video, reading, and multitasking and want the lighter, less expensive device. The Ultra suits people who use the cover screen as their main phone screen, want the larger inner display, and value a telephoto camera enough to pay $200 more. If you do not need a large inner screen at all, the Galaxy Z Flip8 folds smaller and launched at $1,199.99.
